Urbania Van on Rent in Katra

Katra exists for one reason: it is the base town for the Vaishno Devi yatra, and almost everybody who arrives is part of a group. Families come from Delhi, Punjab and across North India, arrive by train into Katra or Jammu, and need a vehicle for the legs the trek does not cover - the station, the hotel, Banganga, and afterwards the onward journey to Amritsar, Patnitop or home.

We run 9, 12, 13, 16 and 17 seater Force Urbania vans on Katra and Vaishno Devi trips with a driver, from Rs 35 per km. To be clear about what this is: the yatra itself is a trek and no vehicle goes up the track. We handle everything either side of it.

What the Vehicle Does and Does Not Do

We would rather set this out plainly than have a group arrive expecting to be driven to the bhawan.

What we cover

• Pickup from Jammu airport, Jammu Tawi or Katra railway station.
• Transfers to your Katra hotel, and to the Banganga yatra starting point.
• Waiting through the yatra - the same van and driver are there when you come down.
• Onward travel afterwards to Amritsar, Patnitop, Srinagar or back home.
• Local sightseeing around Katra on a rest day.

What we do not cover

• The trek itself. It is roughly 13 km from Banganga to the bhawan. No private vehicle goes up.
• Yatra registration (RFID card). Mandatory, issued in the pilgrim's name, and done by you.
• Ponies, palki, battery car or helicopter. Arranged on site or through the shrine board, and cheaper booked directly.

Anyone promising to drive you closer than Banganga is misdescribing the trip. We would rather lose a booking to that claim than have a group discover it at the yatra gate with elders in tow.

Urbania Rental Rates for Katra

The rate card below is our published starting point, with the exact rate confirmed when we quote. Most Katra bookings are multi-day, because the vehicle waits through the yatra - so they are quoted on the per-km plan with a 250 km per day minimum.

Per kilometre rates

Full day and outstation packages

For a simple Jammu-Katra transfer and return, the 80 km / 8 hour package at Rs 7,500 covers it. For a Delhi or Amritsar round trip with the yatra in the middle, the per-km plan is normally cheaper - we will price both.

Getting to Katra

The most common booking by far is Amritsar and Katra together - the Golden Temple and Vaishno Devi over three or four days. Groups from the south usually route through Chandigarh.

How the Yatra Actually Works

Registration first

The RFID yatra card is mandatory and is issued at the registration counter in Katra against ID. Without it you cannot start the trek. It is in each pilgrim's own name.

Banganga to the bhawan

Roughly 13 km of paved track with a steady climb. Most walkers take five to seven hours up. Ponies, palki and battery cars cover parts of it; the helicopter from Katra to Sanjichhat removes the majority of the climb but still leaves a walk.

Bhairon Temple

A further climb above the bhawan, traditionally completed after darshan. Groups regularly underestimate this - it is a real additional stretch at the point where everyone is already tired.

Coming back down

The descent is quicker but harder on the knees. Most groups return to Katra late in the evening or overnight, which is precisely why having your own van waiting matters - arranging transport at 11 PM with a tired group is nobody's idea of a good end to a pilgrimage.

How long to allow

A minimum of two nights in Katra: arrive and rest, do the yatra, recover and travel on. One-night plans routinely go wrong.

Which Urbania for a Yatra Group

Family of 8 to 10

The 12 seater Urbania at Rs 35 per km.

Group of 12 to 16

The 16 seater at Rs 38 or 17 seater at Rs 40 - the standard booking for a community or temple group.

When elders are travelling

The 9 seater Maharaja Urbania at Rs 50 per km. After a 26 km round trek, the quality of the seat on the drive back is not a small consideration.

For the hill approach roads specifically, the Urbania against a standard tempo traveller comparison is worth reading.

Travelling with Elders and Children

Most Vaishno Devi groups include someone who will not walk the full 26 km, and planning around that honestly at the booking stage saves a great deal of difficulty on the day. The usual mistake is assuming the group will stay together the whole way. It rarely does, and it does not need to.

The split-group plan

Younger members walk from Banganga; elders take the helicopter to Sanjichhat or a palki, and the two parties meet at the bhawan. Coming down, they separate again. Because the van and driver are yours for the duration, whoever finishes first waits in comfort in Katra rather than standing at a taxi stand - and the driver can make two runs if the parties arrive hours apart.

The rest-day plan

Anyone not doing the trek at all stays in Katra, and the van is available during the day for the local temples and Jhajjar Kotli, rather than sitting idle. This is one of the clearest arguments for a dedicated vehicle over per-trip hire.

What to be realistic about

• The Bhairon Temple climb above the bhawan is a genuine additional stretch, taken at the point when everyone is already tired.
• The descent is quicker than the climb but considerably harder on the knees.
• Helicopter tickets remove most of the climb but not all of it - there is still a walk at the top.
• Late-evening returns to Katra are normal, not exceptional. Plan for the group to be exhausted.

Practical Notes for Katra

• Best months. March to October. December and January bring snow at the bhawan - beautiful, and considerably harder going.
• Navratri is extraordinarily busy in both March-April and September-October. Book vehicles and hotels months ahead.
• Leather is not permitted beyond a point on the track. Belts, wallets and bags need planning.
• Cloakrooms are available at Banganga for what you cannot carry - anything else stays in the van.
• Start the climb early morning or evening to avoid the midday sun on the exposed sections.
• Helicopter tickets are released through the shrine board and sell out quickly. Book them yourself, well ahead.

Included

• The vehicle and fuel for the distance travelled.
• A driver experienced on the Jammu-Katra hill approach.
• Waiting time while the group completes the yatra.
• Vehicle documentation, permits and insurance.

Billed separately

• Driver allowance - Rs 700 per day for the 9, 12, 13 and 16 seater; Rs 800 for the 17 seater and Maharaja. This continues through the yatra days.
• Driver accommodation in Katra where the hotel does not provide it.
• Tolls and state entry taxes.
• Parking in Katra and at Banganga.
• Yatra registration, ponies, palki, battery car and helicopter - all arranged directly by you.

A closing note on cost, because it is the question we are asked most and the one most often answered misleadingly elsewhere. A Katra booking looks expensive per kilometre travelled, because the vehicle spends whole days waiting rather than running. Judged per day of the trip, or per person, it is modest - and the alternative, arranging separate transport at each stage with a tired group late at night, costs more than money. We quote the waiting days openly rather than burying them.
